Just a couple of Quick tips about winter use and your Subaru
Remember to turn off your wipers before shutting off your car when arriving at your destination, or you may find your wipers frozen to the windshield when the wiper motor comes on, when you start the car up next resulting in damage to the wipers linkage or motor. Its also a good idea to turn off the head lights and heater, that way when you try and start it the next time, the battery doesn’t have to work as hard this is especially important if you have put off replacing your battery until it doesn’t work anymore.
Many current Subaru models don’t have enough clearance for tire chains, be sure to consult your owner’s manual.
If you are experiencing traction issues, try lowering your tire pressure to say 24lbs to temporarily to improve traction. Just remember to reinflate when you can.
It’s a good idea to check your windshield washer fluid for level and freeze protections if you’re unsure how to check the freeze protection just add some concentrate. You will need it driving around the Seattle area and the sanded roads.
If you havent been in for at least three months, you want to check your coolant and oil levels. This should be done every two weeks anyways, but there is no time like the present.
If you do need to venture out grab a blanket and some water. You should also have a roadside safety kit in your car. You never know when they may come in handy.
Lastly keep your gas tank filled. It adds traction, and if you are stuck somewhere for a while you will be glad your stuck with a full tank rather than on E.

If I go with separate wheels and winter tires and I get the tire pressure sensors for the new set, how do I get them recognized by the cars system so the light does not come on all the time. If I match up these sensors will the original wheel tire combos and their sensors still match when I put them back on in spring>

The sensors merely need to be registered with the Module, just like when the tires are rotated.

I want to know what you recommend on snow tires. My son has a new outback and thinks it would be good to get snow tires on a spare set of wheels. Should they be the 17 inch wheels? I have always gone with 16s amongh other reasons the width is a little narrower and a better parth thru the snow. Would appreciate your thoughts on this.

If you can find 16 inch wheels that will clear the brakes and the overall circumference is the same 16 inch wheels can be a better option.
